Earthrise:

Apollo 8 - 1968

The Apollo 8 "Earthrise" photo is one of the most famous and culturally significant images in human history. It is the iconic photograph of the Earth rising above the lunar horizon, taken during the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon.

Mission: Apollo 8, the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon.

Date Taken: December 24, 1968 (Christmas Eve).

Photographer: Astronaut William (Bill) Anders, the Lunar Module Pilot.

The Moment: As the Apollo 8 spacecraft emerged from behind the Moon on its fourth orbit, the crew—Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders—unexpectedly witnessed the vibrant, colorful Earth rising above the stark gray lunar surface.

The Shot: Anders, who was photographing the Moon's surface with a black-and-white camera, quickly grabbed a Hasselblad with color film (custom Ektachrome) and captured the famous shot. The original image was taken with the Earth to the side. Still, NASA later rotated it to show the Earth "rising" over the horizon for a more dramatic effect.
