Mercury:
The MESSENGER mission was the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury.
Launch: The MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) spacecraft was launched on August 3, 2004.
Journey: To reach Mercury, the spacecraft employed a series of "gravity assist" flybys, utilizing the gravitational pull of Earth once, Venus twice, and Mercury three times to slow down before being inserted into orbit around Mercury.
Orbit: On March 18, 2011, MESSENGER became the first spacecraft to successfully enter orbit around Mercury.
First Image: On March 29, 2011, at 5:20 a.m. EDT, the spacecraft captured this image, marking the first-ever photograph taken from a Mercury orbit. Over the next six hours, it captured an additional 363 images.
Mission Completion: The MESSENGER mission ended on April 30, 2015, when the spacecraft, out of fuel, intentionally crashed into the planet's surface.
