"The Image of the Century":
Lunar Orbiter 1 – 1966
First View of Earth from the Moon (1966): A black and white image of a crescent Earth taken by Lunar Orbiter I in August 1966. It was also heralded by some journalists as the "Image of the Century."
Lunar Orbiter 1's successful mission laid the groundwork for subsequent lunar exploration and the Apollo program. The data and images it provided were instrumental in selecting landing sites for Apollo missions, ultimately contributing to humanity's first steps on the Moon. The mission also marked a significant milestone in space exploration, demonstrating the capabilities of robotic spacecraft in conducting scientific research beyond Earth.
